It will no longer be called Common Core academic standards. Gov. Jan Brewer issued an executive order renaming the national uniform academic standard which measures students’ learning. It will now be called the "Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards.” The governor’s executive order on Friday comes after Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal proposed the change last week. In a statement he said the change was necessary to reaffirm that Arizona acts independent and imposes its own education policies.
Arizona is one of 45 states using the standard. The Arizona Board of Education adopted Common Core in 2010. Since then, Republican activists have criticized the education standard. They said Common Core has been a way for the federal government to take away local control.
