Only 61 Percent Of Recycling Centers Are Paying Customers Properly

Some Arizona recycling centers may not be giving you your money’s worth. The Department of Weights and Measures says only 61 percent of the scales they checked during a recent audit were accurate.

Compliance Director Shawn Marquez says they conducted audits in 39 locations, after receiving complaints about 29 of them, and found numerous problems.

“The scales out of calibration, tamper proof seals not on there—all sorts of illegal scales being used, those that are really toys, that are really just junk,” Marquez said.

He says the improper scales being used often shortchanged customers. Marquez says Weights & Measures will be keeping closer tabs on this type of business.
