Grocery bills in Phoenix may decrease next year. That is if the Phoenix City Council votes Wednesday to cut the food tax in half to 1 percent starting January 2014. The council has proposed several options to offset the revenue loss if the tax is reduced so public safety funds, and the bond rating will not be affected.
Councilman Michael Johnson opposes the reduction of the tax. He said in a public hearing on September 16he does not want to reduce the tax until all of the services cut during the recession are restored.
The food tax will fully expire in March 2015.
