Credit Card Skimmer Found Attached To Gas Pump

State officials said they have discovered a credit card skimmer attached to a gas pump in Scottsdale. Shawn Marquez of the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures said there is no way for a consumer to know a skimmer has been attached to a pump, but that cooperation between the state and gas stations is limiting the impact of the problem.

“Unfortunately in too many other states they kind of just throw up their hands and go, 'Well there’s nothing we can do about it,’ and we disagree with that,” Marquez said. “We say yes, there is something we can do about it and we’ve been teaching station owners, industry, everybody else about what they can do to become what’s called a hard target.”

Marquez said some people may choose to avoid the problem by paying cash for their gas, but he has no concerns about using his debit card when he buys gas.
