Nevada Finalizes Rules For Driver's Authorization Cards

LAS VEGAS — A state legislative committee has approved the final rules for Nevada's Driver’s Authorization Cards, which will allow undocumented immigrants to drive legally in the state.
The biggest fight over Nevada’s new driver’s authorization cards was about document translations. The new rules say applicants need to have any foreign documents translated by individuals from a list approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV says it cannot regulate how much translators charge.
Immigration advocates took issue with the rules, saying people should be able to avoid extra costs and seek out help with translating from family or friends who speak English.
On the other hand, members of Nevada’s Interpreters and Translators Association say the DMV is not being critical enough of acceptable translation services.
People can begin applying for driver's authorization cards on Jan. 2.
