Phoenix Police Investigate Baggage Theft

Phoenix police are concerned about an increase in baggage theft at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Spokesman Sergeant Steve Martos said they have released photos of four people in hopes someone will recognize them and call. Martos notes the thefts are important but are dwarfed by the volume of bags going through the airport.

“Between 500,000 to 700,000 pieces of luggage go through the airport on a monthly basis. We’re looking somewhere in the neighborhood of about 10 or 12 or so that were taken in the last couple of  months," Martos explained.

Martos said police are working proactively to find the suspects and sending the message to holiday travelers that their bags will be safe. Working with airport security, Martos said officers have put an end to the large-scale theft of bags they discovered in 2009. Two people were arrested and charged in that case.
