New Report Details Problems In Nevada ICE Detention

LAS VEGAS — A law clinic at the University of Nevada Las Vegas released a report last week raising concerns about an immigration detention center in the Las Vegas metro area.

The report is based on 29 interviews with detainees who were held at the Henderson Detention Center. The City of Henderson operates the facility, and receives more than $100 a day from Immigration and Customs Enforcement for each person held there.

Fatma Marouf, a law professor and lawyer with the UNLV legal clinic, says the allegations indicate that the facility violated the legal and civil rights of detainees.

“Lack of prompt access to medical care, problems in transportation of detainees pushing shoving, verbal harassment, overly tight handcuffs, overcrowded detention cells, denial of access to attorneys," Marouf said.

Marouf has also submitted public comment on the concerns to the Henderson City Council. Thus far, neither the City of Henderson, the Henderson Police Department, nor ICE have responded to requests for interviews.
