One of the state’s most notorious murder cases is headed back to court for a third time Wednesday.
Prosecutors are again seeking a conviction in the killings of nine people at a Buddhist temple in 1991.
Johnathan Doody, who was 17 at the time, was originally convicted of the murders at the Wat Promkunaram temple in 1993 and sentenced to 281 years in prison.
But an appeals court threw the conviction out in 2011, ruling his confession was improperly obtained.
The now 39-year-old Doody was put on trial again in August, but a judge declared a mistrial when jurors were unable to reach a verdict.
Opening statements in his third trial began this morning. Doody, who remains behind bars, has maintained his innocence.
