Latinos Signing Up For ACA In Strong Numbers

As the rollout of the Affordable Care Act continues, the Obama administration is intensifying its outreach — especially to Latino households and Spanish speakers. With the Spanish-language ACA website now running the White House hopes to make up for lost time.

Latino Americans are the mostly likely to lack health insurance in the nation. So they are a prime demographic if the ACA is going to meet its goal numbers.

But it was only this week that the Spanish-language enrollment website was able to go online. However it was running smoothly.

"The CuidadoDeSalud.gov site is live, people are enrolling through it," said Cecilia Muñoz is the Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. "We’ve gone essentially what we’re calling a soft launch which is an initial period where we’re working with stakeholders and key folks to make sure we are getting feedback on how well it’s working. But essentially the enrollment process online is now available.”

According to a study released this week by the Transamerica Center for Health Studies, Latinos are better informed about the Affordable Care Act than the general population. And 5 percent of Latinos have already purchased health insurance through the new exchanges, compared to just 1 percent of the white population.
