Cost Of Eggs, Bacon Rising

The cost of a traditional bacon and eggs breakfast went up in the last quarter of 2013, with eggs selling at more than $2 per dozen. Bacon was flirting with $5 per pound.

The Arizona Farm Bureau’s Julie Murphree says the price spike was not unusual because of the strong demand for eggs over the holidays.

“There really isn’t a good substitute, I like to say, for eggs in holiday recipes,” Murphree said. “So as long as we’re going to celebrate with friends and family around the holidays, we’re probably going to end up getting a boost in egg prices.”

Murphree predicts egg prices will come down in the weeks ahead. As for bacon, she says that’s another matter, as the impact of drought continues to drive up feed prices and boost the cost of all red meat.

The one real bargain in the final quarter of the year was potatoes, with a 5-pound bag costing a dollar less than in the third quarter of 2013.
