The Republican field for governor has grown. Mesa Mayor Scott Smith filed paperwork on Thursday to run for the state’s highest office. He joins a GOP primary field that already includes Secretary of State Ken Bennett, Treasurer Doug Ducey, former GoDaddy executive Christine Jones, State Sen. Al Melvin and former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, among others.
Smith was elected mayor of Mesa in 2008, and won re-election in 2012. He is also currently president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
The winner of the GOP primary will likely face former Regent Fred DuVall. He is the only Democrat seeking his party’s gubernatorial nomination.
