Officials Warn Motorists Can Be Charged For Altering License Plates

State officials say they’re concerned about motorists with specialty plates who may be making changes to them, which is illegal.

Department of Motor Vehicles Division spokesman Harold Sanders says it’s possible the people making the changes may have thought it was okay, since they paid extra for the plates.

“Those plates have a specific design that is pretty much approved by law and you cannot alter, change the face, or modify that plate,” Sanders said.

The MVD has been getting reports of decals or other symbols being attached to the plates, according to Sanders, who says violators face possible misdemeanors and fines of at least $300.
