Phony Support Technicians Scam Microsoft Windows Users

Police in Tucson are warning people about a scam involving Microsoft Windows users. Officer Brandon Tatum says individuals claiming to be support technicians from the software giant have been calling people and offering to help fix issues with their computers.

“The suspects offer to fix the errors by giving specific instructions that will allow them to gain remote access to the victim’s computer,” Tatum said. “In addition, a fee ranging from $150 up to $400 is charged.”

Tatum says it is unclear how the callers gained access to information about the computer problems that supposedly had been sent only to Microsoft, following a prompt on their computers. He says there have been at least three reported victims of the scam.
