Residents of a South Phoenix neighborhood are attempting to inspire change with a community cleanup on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Devin Del Palacio organized the neighborhood event set for Monday afternoon at 9th Avenue and Pima Street.

“A day on, not a day off,” Del Palacio said. “We have to do something to honor his legacy by giving back to the community, by helping others, giving a hand up not a hand down, and that’s what we’re doing here by beautifying this neighborhood.”

Del Palacio said King would have wanted the day used to unite the community. He says there will be a tribute to Dr. King before the cleanup begins.
