Border Patrol agents make an arrest near the border outside Hidalgo, Texas.

In its end-of-year report for 2013, U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated the agency stopped more than 420,789 people from crossing the border illegally.

The number represents a 16 percent increase from the previous year.

More than half of those stopped were coming from Central American countries like Honduras and Guatemala where heavy gang and drug violence is ongoing. The number of Mexicans apprehended has remained stable.

Overall apprehensions along the southern border are still at a 40-year low.
