EPA Wants To Cut Arizona Emissions

The Grand Canyon's projected clean air date is 2127.

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed pollution controls at six Arizona facilities to improve air quality at nearby national parks.

The EPA wants to cut emissions at six smelter, cement and power plants in Phoenix, Tucson, Peach Springs, Hayden, Miami and Rillito.

The proposal would reduce sulfur dioxide by almost 30,000 tons a year and nitrogen oxides by 3,100 tons per year. These cuts come after the EPA’s move to control emissions at the Navajo Generating Station.

The EPA will hold public hearings on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 in Phoenix and Tucson, respectively. The agency plans to make a decision by June 27.
