Arizona ’s ban on roadside pet sales would be expanded statewide under legislation given the unanimous approval on Tuesday of the House Water and Agriculture Committee. The measure is currently in effect only in Maricopa and Pima Counties , but Kay Dixon of Pinal County Animal Control says the measure is a step in the right direction.
“The focus of this bill is to put puppy mills out of business,” Dixon said. “Puppy mills are considered unethical breeders who peddle puppies for profit, ignoring the health of the animal.”
The bill does not apply to the sale of livestock and poultry. Nobody spoke out against the bill. The panel also passed legislation requiring commercial pet breeders to get their animals examined by a veterinarian before they’re bred.
