Rates of diabetes vary widely across Arizona. Some parts of the state have high concentrations of the disease, while others rank among the lowest in the nation. A nationwide map by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention details diabetes rates by county. In Arizona, Maricopa, Pima, Santa Cruz and Coconino County have the lowest rates of the disease. Mohave, Navajo, Apache and La Paz have the highest rates in the state.
The counties with the higher rates also have greater numbers of Native Americans. The Indian Health Service said American Indians are two times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic whites.
The map also displays data on other risk factors for the disease, such as obesity, physical inactivity and gender.
