Former Navajo Nation President Cleared Of Misconduct Claims

Prosecutors said charges will be dropped against a former Navajo Nation president accused of misusing tribal funds.

The case goes back to 2009 when Joe Shirley Jr. was tribal president. The Navajo Tribal council at the time said the two-term president was illegally dealing with two companies that operated on the reservation. The council asked for an investigation when it heard stories of alleged improprieties within Shirley’s office.

Special prosecutors assigned to the case said they found no evidence of misconduct. At the request of prosecutors, a tribal judge dismissed the claims against the former Navajo president.
