Celebrate The 50th Anniversary Of The Wilderness Act With Hikes

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act and to celebrate, Arizona Highways Magazine has organized a series of wilderness hikes through some of the state’s most spectacular protected lands.

Editor-in-Chief Robert Stieve says hikers will be joined on the trail by representatives of the Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Managment and the Arizona Wilderness Coalition.

“It’s a unique opportunity bringing together a lot of different experts and having them on the trail,” Stieve said. “What better way to learn about the vegetation in the White Mountains than to be spending six or seven hours out on the trail with the people who write the books about those things?"

Hikes are planned for Mount Baldy wilderness in the White Mountains, the Bell Trail near Sedona, and Humphrey’s Peak outside Flagstaff . Arizona Highways photographers will also be along to provide photo tips. Sign-ups are expected to be available in a couple weeks.
