The strong winter storm that is marching across the East Coast is forcing some people to stay a little longer in the warm sunshine of Arizona today. A few flights have been cancelled at Sky Harbor International Airport.
Sky Harbor officials said some flights departing Phoenix have been cancelled to Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Philadelphia and Newark. A few flights to Arizona from the Eastern seaboard also were cancelled or delayed. Andrew Christie is a spokesman with Tempe-based US Airways and he said so far, nine flights into Phoenix were cancelled and eight flights departing Phoenix were cancelled as of late Thursday afternoon.
“US Airways has relaxed our change fee policy for individuals flying to and from the affected cities. We strongly suggest to our customers who are traveling either today or tomorrow to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport," Christie said.
The worst of the storm is leaving the south but there is no telling when the snow and ice will let up in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states. Airline officials said there may be more cancellations or delays on Friday.
