If you are heading to Las Vegas for the holiday weekend, you will want to keep an eye on your speed. The Department of Public Safety will have an eye in the sky. DPS said it will be using a single-engine plane to look for speeders on U-S 93, between Phoenix and Vegas. That is the main highway between the two cities, and the highway patrol said a previous airborne traffic enforcement effort found the average speed on 93 was 86 miles per hour.
DPS said the pilot of the aircraft and an observer will be able to contact Highway Patrol units on the ground to arrange traffic stops. The operation will be focused on the stretch of 93 south of Interstate 40. The speed limit on that section of the highway is no higher than 65 miles an hour.
