House Approves Bill Against Laser Pointing

The Arizona House on Thursday gave its approval to getting tough on people who point lasers at an aircraft, whether it is civilian or law enforcement. The measure raises the current misdemeanor offense to a felony. Mesa Democrat Andrew Sherwood was among the bipartisan supporters of the bill.

“I think it’s an important issue,” Sherwood said. “I’m very pleased that we’re getting a good bill from Public Safety, and I think we’re getting it right here with this amendment.”

Under the amendment from Republican Warren Petersen, laser pointing would remain a misdemeanor for those under the age of 19. A formal House vote is next.
