Arizona will have a permanent memorial to remember the fallen Granite Mountain Hotshots, if a bill unanimously approved in a House Committee wins final approval. Rep. Karen Fann’s bill earmarks $500,000 to create the state park, which the Prescott Republican said is about preserving the site.

“The actual location where they perished, we felt it should be a site that should be preserved in the future,” Fann said. “As I’ve said before the thought of building a water tank or a house on that site somehow just seems wrong in so many ways.”

Fann’s bill would also create a committee to help develop concepts for the memorial, which needs to be kept low-key to keep it from impacting neighboring homes. The measure now moves to the floor of the House.
