U.S. Justice Department Reaches Agreement With Ganado Unified Schools

The U.S. Justice Department has reached agreement with a northeast Arizona school district to improve instruction of Navajo students who are learning English. The Justice Department said the settlement will ensure
students attending the Ganado Unified Schools have equal opportunities to participate in the district's educational programs.  The district is located on the Navajo Reservation.

According to the DOJ, requirements of the agreement include properly identifying English-learning students when they enroll in school and providing information to parents in languages they understand. Other provisions deal with training for district employees, instruction material and monitoring of students who opt out or leave English Language Learning programs.

The agreement said it is an attempt to avoid court action.
