Teen drivers would be banned from using cell phones, under a bill approved unanimously on Thursday in the House Transportation Committee.
Committee Chair Karen Fann’s bill prohibits newly-licensed teens from talking or texting behind the wheel and carries a $75 dollar fine for violations.
“This is why we have restrictions,” Fann said. “It is important for them to have 100 percent of their concentration on learning how to drive, number one, and learning how to be a defensive driver.”
If passed, the legislation would add to the restrictions approved for Arizona’s G-class drivers in 2007, which include barring teens from driving overnight and limiting passengers in the first year of their licenses.
