A small group of veterans and members of the military will get a chance to reintegrate into society through a weekend in April writing in the wilderness near Tucson.
Ron Capps of the Veterans Writing Project says veterans, especially combat veterans, tend to become isolated when they return to civilian life and college.
“Because the military is all about team cohesion, it’s the mission of the team that’s the most important and all of a sudden, you’re by yourself,” Capps said. “You’ve always had the platoon, the squad, your buddy, your wingman. In many cases, that person doesn’t exist anymore at the university. So, we’re trying to beat the sense of isolation.”
The retreat is a pilot project that could be expanded nationwide. Participants will be responsible for their own camping gear and transportation to Tucson. The deadline to apply is March 7. Veterans can request an application at [email protected]
