A Phoenix police officer who was wounded in a shootout with a murder suspect on Monday afternoon has been identified.
Detective Albert Casados was released from the hospital Wednesday.
He was shot once in his right side earlier this week, said Sgt. Steve Martos in an email. Casados is a nine-year veteran of the department, and police said he is now resting at home with his wife and children.
Casados and Detective John Hobbs were doing surveillance on a suspect named William Thorton, who had served time earlier this year for a drug conviction and resisting arrest. Detectives were conducting surveillance on Thorton, because he was a suspect in an attempted murder.
When Thornton spotted the undercover officers following him, he apparently wrecked his car while trying to escape then opened fire. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.
Hobbs died hours later from his injuries. His funeral will be held Monday at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria.
