Arizona Sen. John McCain has introduced legislation to extend the congressional authorization of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area. The senator wants the Heritage Area extended for 15 years, through 2030, calling it one of Arizona’s great treasures.
The heritage area has been working to restore Yuma’s riverfront area, celebrate the city’s history and revitalize its downtown area. Its master plan calls for the long-term sustainability of Yuma’s two state historic parks. Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park and Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park.
Yuma Crossing was first authorized in 2000 and McCain said it has grown into a collaborative effort by local, tribal and federal partners that has transformed the city and helped restore the banks of the Colorado River.
