Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, who has been serving a life sentence in a Texas prison, is hospitalized in Galveston.
Jeffs was in stable condition after being admitted for treatment of a non-life-threatening condition last week, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Spokesman Robert Hurst refused to release additional details of the 58-year-old Jeffs’ hospitalization. Jeffs had been held in isolation at a state prison north of Houston.
Three years ago Jeffs, the leader of the polygamist Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints based on the Arizona-Utah border, was sentenced to life plus 20 years for sexually assaulting two girls, who were his underage brides.
Prison officials revoked Jeffs’ phone privileges two years ago, after learning he had preached a Christmas sermon to his FLDS congregation over a speakerphone, in violation of the rules.
