Glendale City Council And Tohono O’odham Nation Begin Casino Talks

The Glendale City Council this week voted, narrowly, to start formal talks with the Tohono O’odham Nation on its proposed resort and casino near 95th and Northern Avenues. The council also decided to formally oppose a bill in Congress that aims to block the project. The two sides have been at odds for several years, after the Nation bought the land and announced its  plans to build the casino.

Glendale City Councilman Gary Sherwood voted to start the talks. He said while he still opposes the project, it is time to see if the sides can reach a deal.

We did reach out to representatives of the Tohono O’odham Nation, but they did not respond to our requests for comment. In a statement released earlier this week, Tohono O’dham Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. said, in part, “The Nation looks forward to working with Glendale leaders and staff to find a way for us to move forward together for the benefit of the entire West Valley.”
