West Texas Energy Boom A Threat To Astronomy
The energy boom in Texas and New Mexico is inadvertently compromising the jet-black night skies that astronomers need to research dark energy, which is the unknown, undefined power responsible for the accelerating pace of the expansion of the universe.
But there’s a way out, says Bill Wren of the McDonald Observatory. First you talk to players in the oil patch.
“It’s not on their radar. I mean, I wouldn’t call it ignorance," he said. "There’s no blip on the screen for them to ignore. It’s not an issue they’ve even heard of before.”

Authorities Investigate Child Suicide At Juárez Migrant Shelter
Mexican authorities are working to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of a 12-year-old girl in a migrant shelter in the border city of Juárez.
The girl was found hanging from a shower curtain rod last Tuesday. An autopsy determined the cause of death was suicide.
