Budget Approval Allows Converted Charter Schools To Keep Operating

Charter school conversions were a major sticking point during this week’s budget talks. Last year, districts around the state converted about 60 schools to charters, and the budget approved by the House Thursday night will allow those schools to keep operating.

That is good news for Kevin Hegarty. He is the CFO of the Higley Unified School District, which built two middle schools, made them charters and leased them through a private foundation.

Hegarty mentioned some charter school programs in districts are innovative. Jonathan Butcher agrees. He is the education director at the Goldwater Institute.
