Barrio Azteca Gang Shows How Crime Transcends Borders
The Barrio Azteca embody the U.S.-Mexico border, beginning with its name. Its members live and work in both countries and profit from the drug trafficking industry.
"Now we're talking about Barrio Azteca members who wear body armor and know how to build car bombs and how to use an M-4 or an AK-47 or some of these more high-caliber, nasty military weapons," said Detective Jeff Gibson of the El Paso County Sheriff's Department.
Mónica Ortiz Uribe gives us a profile of the Barrio Azteca gang. Also, as part of researching that gang’s history, she found an unlikely connection.
Arpaio, Chief Deputy Admonished By Judge
A top leader at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office admitted Monday to a federal judge that he made a mistake. He was caught on tape undermining the judge’s order that found the sheriff’s office had racially profiled Latino drivers.
The court obtained a video of Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan taken in October. He was briefing deputies on Judge Murray Snow’s court order, which requires new training and protocols at the sheriff’s office.
Sheridan used the words “ludicrous” and “crap” in reference to the order, according to a memo Snow issued to the parties. "I am concerned about sending mixed messages to deputies," Snow said.
