The country's most stringent restrictions on the use of abortion drugs are back on hold less than a day after taking effect. This is the latest round involving Arizona’s abortion laws.
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a preliminary injunction on Wednesday to temporarily block restrictions on medical abortions in Arizona law.
Under the statute women are banned from taking the most common abortion-inducing drug, RU-486, after the seventh week of pregnancy. Women had been allowed to take the abortion pill through nine weeks of pregnancy.
The law had taken effect on Tuesday when a lower federal court refused to intervene.
Planned Parenthood Arizona appealed the lower court’s decision.
The Ninth Circuit is expected to decide whether to continue or lift the stay as early as Monday.
