Chickens can now come home to roost in Gilbert. The town council voted unanimously Thursday to allow the birds on small lots.
Now, anyone in Gilbert with property as small as 6,000 square feet can own up to five chickens. This change comes after a flood of emails from residents who wanted to own birds on land smaller than the legal limit. Councilman Victor Petersen said the law is not just about chickens, it’s about property rights.
“There is no reason to limit people from using and enjoying if it’s not harming anyone else in the process. I think we found that balance," said Petersen.
Petersen said some people were concerned about the noise and foul smell. To keep the peace, the louder birds such as roosters and peacocks are only allowed on land 20,000 square feet or larger.
