A party-line vote in the state legislature leaves just one hurdle for a bill that would allow warrantless inspections of abortion clinics: Gov. Brewer. And, while Brewer said she never comments on legislation before reading them, she concedes she has signed every abortion restriction to reach her desk.
“I have. I am pro life, and I believe that we have done a good job in Arizona," Brewer said.
That has not stopped Cathi Herrod of the anti-abortion Center for Arizona Policy from firing off an email, urging supporters to contact the governor about the bill and taking a shot at Planned Parenthood, which opposes the bill.
“Planned Parenthood often seems to be more interested in selling abortions than in taking care of women's needs and presenting women with truly informed choice," said Herrod.
That’s a charge to which Planned Parenthood Arizona President Bryan Howard took particular offense.
“It's laughable and it's cynical. And it just demonstrates how she can't stand on the substance of her legislation," said Howard.
And, Howard said if the governor signs the bill, he expects a court challenge.
