The Arizona House has given its approval to a measure that would ban new drivers from using their cell phones once they get their license.
Senate Bill 1168 would generally prohibit the use of cell phones and other wireless communication devices for six months. For new drivers, there are exceptions for emergencies. But, breaking that law would be a secondary offense, meaning officers couldn’t pull a new driver over unless they are violating another law.
Tuesday’s 40-20 vote in the House sends the bill back to the Senate for a final vote. If that chamber gives its OK and the governor signs the bill into law, it would take effect in July of next year.
Supporters say it would make the roads safer and encourage new drivers to learn good habits behind the wheel, while critics say it should be up to parents to monitor what their kids do while driving.
