Brown Fire Now 25 Percent Contained

Firefighters in southern Arizona are starting to be able to contain the Brown Fire that is burning largely on the Fort Huachuca Army Post.

The blaze, which has charred 240 acres, has burned across 232 acres of the post, but is now 25 percent contained. Spokeswoman Arlene Perea says the moisture of the available fuel and a quick attack by firefighters has limited the scope of the blaze.

“If we were dealing with this same fire in June, we’d definitely be holding our breath, but not that there’s ever a good time to have one but if you’re going to have one in the fire season, the earlier the better,” Perea said.

Seven hotshot crews and two hand crews are battling the flames, totaling about 408 people. Fire officials are also using helicopters to make water drops. Crews were able to complete a hand line around the entire fire on Thursday.
