Tuesday is the last day for Gov. Jan Brewer to take action on two gun bills. The measures deal with concealed weapons in public buildings, and cities or towns that pass gun control ordinances.
The first measure would allow gun owners with concealed-carry permits to bring their weapons into government buildings unless armed security guards, metal detectors and gun lockers are in place. It does not include grade schools, colleges and universities. Brewer vetoed similar legislation last year.
The other bill would fine cities and towns that enforce gun ordinances that are considered stricter than state laws. The fines could go up to $5,000. It also would allow the state to sue municipal government officials like city council members who enforce local ordinances that go beyond state gun laws.
Opponents, including the Arizona Coalition Against Gun Violence, want the governor to veto the measures saying the bills may lead to mass shootings.
