Alleged Barrio Azteca Gang Member Receives 10 Life Sentences

A federal judge sentenced the alleged leader of a transnational gang to 10 life sentences in an El Paso court Thursday.

Government witnesses said Arturo Gallegos Castrellon led a hit squad made up of Barrio Azteca gang members.

A jury convicted him in February of ordering the murders of three people connected to the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juárez, including two Americans. The killings happened in 2010 during the height of drug violence in Juarez.

During the sentencing, the brother of one victim addressed Gallegos Castrellon to say he forgave him. The judge also ordered Gallegos Castrellon to pay more than $900,000 in restitution.

Mónica Ortiz Uribe was a senior field correspondent for the Fronteras Desk from 2010 to 2016.
