The use and sale of fireworks are now banned in unincorporated areas of Coconino County. The county board of supervisors unanimously passed the measure on Friday.
The approval of the ban comes just three days after Gov. Jan Brewer signed a bill allowing rural Arizona counties to limit the use of fireworks when fire danger is high.
Nathan Gonzales is a spokesman for the county. He says area lawmakers were thankful to have the ability to pass this measure as we enter fire season.
"This is something that’s very encouraging because it is very dry up here," said Gonzales. "And everyone is somewhat on edge on what kind of a wildfire season this is going to shape up to be."
The ban will be in effect until the US forest service lifts stage 1 fire restrictions.
