In honor of Memorial Day, a neighborhood association near Peoria has placed 95 full-size American flags in front of their member’s homes. This is the first time the organization has done so.
The effort started around 5 a.m. Monday as about 25 volunteers worked to place a flag in front of every home in the West Cinnabar neighborhood.
The project was the brainchild of Trish Brewer, the president of the neighborhood’s block watch. Brewer, who has two sons actively serving in the Army, said the gesture was a way to remind people, especially area children, of the holiday’s true meaning.
"They actually understand the meaning," Brewer said. "That it’s not just picnics and pool parties, its actually for our fallen soldiers."
The flags will be flown until dusk Monday. Brewer says the organization will be making the same gesture on the 4 th of July.
