Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers has resigned her position, in order to run for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
Lopez Rogers had been mayor of the West Valley city since 2006. But she stepped down from that position Tuesday to run for the seat on the county board that’s been vacated by Mary Rose Wilcox, whose running in the Democratic primary to replace Ed Pastor in Congress.
Last week, State Sen. Steve Gallardo announced he was dropping out of that race to run for the County Board of Supervisors.
Lopez Rogers had also served as President of the National League of Cities — she held that position at the same time former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith was President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Smith has left that post, as he runs in the Republican primary for governor.
Avondale’s Vice Mayor will temporarily assume the mayoral job. The City Council will discuss appointing a new mayor at its meeting next Monday.
