It’s Day One for the new Department of Child Safety. State lawmakers approved bills to create and fund the new agency yesterday, and Gov. Jan Brewer signed them into law hours later.

The department’s director, Charles Flanagan acknowledges there’s a lot to do - saying it’s tough to identify his biggest challenge, because there are so many.

The new law also included a provision adding a tribal representative to the Child Safety Oversight committee. Dr. John Molina, medical director for Native Health Phoenix, says the developments are encouraging.
