Engineers Preparing For Post-Fire Flooding

The Slide Fire that has burned more than 21,000 acres in Oak Creek Canyon is now about 90 percent contained.

But Coconino County spokesman Nathan Gonzales says with monsoon season about a month away, property owners need to apply for flood insurance, and county engineers will try to minimize dangers where they can.

"Take a look at low water crossings, starting to assess what might be some of those danger points when and if we ever get any kind of monsoonal flooding through there," Gonzales said.

But Gonzales says county engineers have learned a lot about flooding in burned out areas in the aftermath of the Schultz Fire in 2010.
