State Game and Fish officials say they’ve managed to save trout season by protecting more than 600,000 young fish at a hatchery threatened by the Slide Fire.
Game and Fish’s Jim Paxson says the fish were threatened by the ash that could wash down into the hatchery when monsoon rains start.
"We don't know when the rains are going to start, but as soon as the rain starts there's going to be soil and ash and debris moving, so it's just best to get those fish out of there," Paxson said.
Paxson says about 200,000 of the trout were too small to safely move them to another hatchery, but that they’re still relatively protected.
