The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a criminal probe into allegations of misconduct at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The involvement of the bureau’s Phoenix office was confirmed at a Wednesday morning hearing before the House Judiciary committee.
The move comes amid mounting pressure from veterans groups and lawmakers to pursue criminal investigations.
Dan Caldwell is with Concerned Veterans for America. He said the probe is a necessary step for reform at the VA, adding that it’s unacceptable to allow administrators who are found to be involved with fraudulent activity to simply resign.
"If these lists were manipulated for monetary reasons and they ultimately lead to the deaths of veterans who were waiting on these fake lists, I think that is criminal activity and it should be investigated as such," said Caldwell.
This is the latest development to emerge from the scandal involving allegations of data manipulation and delays in care witihin VA medical facilities.
