Glendale officials has wrapped up it’s first “warrant wipe out” program in hopes of getting people to pay their outstanding traffic tickets and misdemeanor fines. But only 140 people came forward in time to avoid jail time.
Glendale police said the city has more than 13,000 outstanding misdemeanor warrants dating back to the 1990s. So last week Glendale launched a three-day effort encouraging scofflaws to clear up their warrants without any worries about going to jail.
Police spokesman Jay O’Neill said the low turnout is probably because of all of the excitement over soccer.
“We did see a decline once the World Cup became really active on television, on social media. So we did see a little bit of a decline with the people that were coming in. So, we think that may have been a factor," O'Neill said.
O’Neill said anyone who didn’t pay off their fines last week can expect Glendale police to show up at their door in the future. He said they might go directly to jail.
