Gov. Jan Brewer says it may be time to consider a ban on discrimination against gays in Arizona.
Brewer got national attention earlier this year when she vetoed a bill allowing business owners to use their sincerely held religious beliefs to refuse service to gays. She said then the measure was a solution in search of a problem.
But she also noted Arizona’s civil rights laws, which do not protect gays, already allow such service refusals.
“It's certainly something that I believe if it needs to be addressed, it needs to be debated in the legislature. Testimony needs to be presented. And let the representatives of the people that have been elected by the populace of the state of Arizona determine and get it up to the governor,” Brewer said.
Brewer says she does not believe in any kind of discrimination but she’s not sure a new law is needed because she says there’s not much discrimination against gays anymore anyway.
